ENGINE IGNITION COMPONENTS by Perma-Tune
Here is the line up of new Perma-Tune ignition modules for vintage European super cars.
These are the fifth generation version of the original Perma-Tune ignition system co designed by Ferdinand Porsche and Theodore Sturm in the late 1960’s. The original Perma-Tune “blue box” was made in Newport Beach, California and was installed at the Porsche factory on the 1974 thru 1976 Porsche 911.
The new Gen 5 Perma-Tune has a brand new Bosch look alike housing made in Germany. The internal components are all new parts and are of the very latest American Perma-Tune design and manufacture. These ignition modules are intended for use on cars that are judged on originality and functionality and will provide increased engine performance. Each of these model Perma-Tunes are ready to plug in and bolt up to the car and are indistinguishable from the original part.
The digital circuitry in all Perma-Tune ignition modules was specially developed by us to operate in vintage vehicles that harbor many sources of interference that wreak havoc with other brands of digital engine controls. These new Perma-Tune ignition modules have on board diagnostics, self-healing components and self-resetting overload protectors that make our ignition modules uniquely reliable. They are also backwards compatible with the latest Perma-Tune communications smart cables for USB and Bluetooth programming.
Part number 911SC903. Known as the “six pin” ignition module. Will bolt up and plug into all Porsche 911SC cars. It will also fit most Porsche 930 Turbo cars that were built for the US market.
Part number 930903. Known as the “eight pin” ignition module. Will bolt up and plug into all Porsche 930 Turbo cars that were built for the European market. This ignition module is also original to many open wheel race cars of the day. Shown is the original housings with Advanced Ignition Technology inside. These parts are available only as core exchange parts. Eight pin compatible “look alike” models are available without a core.
OLD LOOK, NEW ACT:
Perma-Tune introduces an all new product line of ignition parts for vintage American muscle cars. These parts are designed to look period correct with large aluminum fins and simple three wire hook ups while, in fact, they house the very latest digital technology. The CLS 903 Perma-Tune ignition module was specially developed by us to operate in vintage vehicles that harbor many sources of interference that wreak havoc with other brands of digital engine controls. These new Perma-Tune ignition modules have on board diagnostics, self-healing components and self-resetting overload protectors that make our ignition modules uniquely reliable. Complicated wiring and specialized programming modules are replaced by software that is easy to program with any smart phone, tablet or desk top computer. Bundles of wires are replaced with wireless connections for fast, reliable installations.
EASY DOES IT:
You do not need to be a computer expert to use the new Perma-Tune ignition. If you can use a smart phone you can program this system. Not that it must be programmed, in most cases the Perma-Tune can be installed without any program modifications at all.
Single cable connection between the Perma-Tune Ignition and the Wiring Hub makes for plug and play installation and expand-ability. Perma-Tune Smart Wires make USB and Bluetooth connections plug and play too.
ONE PART, MANY ENGINES:
The CLS 903 Perma-Tune can be configured to accommodate any distributor engine up to 12 cylinders and a wide variety of ignition coils. Distributor triggering configuration is done with software settings rather than hardware. All timing and multiple spark settings are software controlled too, there are no jumpers, switches, or dials to set. The Smart Tachometer output is universal, no tachometer matching parts are required.
LOOK THIS WAY:
Keeping an eye on your engine has never been easier. Two LED indicators show you the ignition system status and function at a glance. When the engine is off, the indicators are nearly invisible so as to retain the old school look of your engine compartment.
ACCESS FOR ALL:
Free, open source software makes Advanced Ignition Technology flexible and is compatible with both Windows and Mac OS. Communications protocol is industry standard RS232 providing an open platform for developers.
KEEPS YOUR CAR LOOKING ORIGINAL:
These coils have the period correct look of the 60’s and 70’s with a brown top and black body and will fit the original mounting bracket and wiring harness of the day. The SC110 Coil and Bracket Assembly comes with a period correct sticker on the coil bracket.
OLD LOOK, NEW GUTS:
Perma-Tune coils are specifically designed to resist the heat and vibration that they will encounter on a super car engine. Triple seals insure that the dielectric oil inside the coil will not leak out. The high Voltage tower is extra thick to resist arcing and will still fit the original spark plug wire boot. The internal components of the coil are designed to resist vibration and the coil bracket itself is cushioned with period correct looking cork.
WIRE CONNECTION HUBS
This innovative Wiring Hub is what makes the Perma-Tune accessory wiring easy and reliable. The Wiring Hub eliminates the mass of tangled wires and confusing diagrams that would have been required to install a complete ignition system down to a plug and play add on to the Model CLS 903 Perma-Tune ignition module. These Hubs can be installed at the same time as your Perma-Tune or can be plugged in later as new options become available.
Designed to look like an old school Voltage regulator, the hub can be mounted in a convenient location away from the engine.
KEEPS YOUR CAR LOOKING ORIGINAL:
The Perma-Tune CLS 903 ignition module and the Wiring Hub are connected with a dedicated communications cable disguised by an old school braided ground wire.
Once installed, the Wiring Hub cable looks like the ground wire for an old school Voltage regulator. The cable is passed through the car loom to the Perma-Tune so it looks like a ground wire at the Perma-Tune end of the cable as well.
NO CRIMPS, NO MESS, NO HEADACHES:
Simple plug and play features eliminates the need for wire crimps and complicated wiring diagrams. Wires are cut and stripped, then inserted into the wire bus for a secure connection without the need for special tools and wire crimps.
The Wiring Hub expands the Perma-Tune features for only those that you will use. Wires from a shift light and other ignition accessories connect directly to the Wiring Hub, eliminating crimp connections and unused harness wires from the ignition system harness.
Once all the wires needed are snapped into the bus, the bus is plugged into the Wiring Hub. The Wiring Hub terminals are clearly marked so you know exactly where each wire goes.
Adding functions to your Perma-Tune is as easy as unplugging the wire bus from the Wiring Hub, adding wires to the bus and then plugging the bus back into the Wiring Hub.
NO DIALS, NO SWITCHES, NO PROBLEMS
There are no dials, switches or jumpers to configure that can fail over time. Use your computer or cell phone to make secure, reliable configuration changes.
STRONG, YET FORGIVING:
The Wiring Hub is self-diagnosing and self-resetting. Like the CLS 903 Perma-Tune, the Wiring Hub features on board diagnostics and overload protection. Refer to the USB / Bluetooth section for more information.
The basic Wiring Hub provides these features:

The Bluetooth Smart Wire and USB Smart Wire are two different ways to program any model Perma-Tune ending with the suffix 903. Models 911903, 911SC903, CLS903 and others, are equipped with Advanced Ignition Technology. The Perma-Tune ignitions are identifiable by a Communications Port (Com Port) connector located on the underside of the Perma-Tune ignition module.
The USB Smart Wire is generally used to configure and record the Perma-Tune firmware settings before being installed in the vehicle. The USB Smart Wire also functions as a handy diagnostics tool for any model Perma-Tune equipped with a Com Port.
HOW IT WORKS:
The smart wire plugs into the USB port of a computer and then loads its drivers automatically. Free software is then downloaded to the computer from the internet. Then the smart wire is plugged into the Perma-Tune and a green light on the Perma-Tune begins to flash. The program can then be read and saved as a text file. Engine builders can customize a single ignition module for any engine with a distributor.
The Bluetooth Smart Wire performs the same function of reading and programming the Perma-Tune as the USB Smart Wire but used wireless technology. The Bluetooth Smart Wire is plugged into the Perma-Tune when it is installed in the car and left in place.
KEEPS YOUR CAR LOOKING ORIGINAL:
For aesthetic appeal, the cable that connects the Perma-Tune to the Smart Wire antenna is hidden inside an old school ground wire braid. The end of the wire that has the antenna in it is placed near a window or where it cannot be seen. Once installed, the Smart Wire appears to be the ground wire for the ignition module.
SECURE AND EASY:
Standard Bluetooth pairing protocol assures secure connections. Each Smart Wire has a unique MAC identifier and pass word. A single smart phone or tablet can keep track of and program any number of Perma-Tune Smart Wire equipped cars.
THE COMPETITIVE EDGE:
The Perma-Tune Bluetooth Smart Wire is generally used for fine tuning a car at the race track without the need to remove the Perma-Tune from the car. Any tablet or phone with Bluetooth capability can then pair to the Bluetooth Smart Wire to read, change and store the program. This is very handy to have so that a library of engine programs can be accumulated to accommodate different drivers, race tracks and different race track conditions. Program changes can be done from up to 300 feet away from the car.
The Gen 5 Perma-Tune makes diagnostics easier by providing onboard diagnostics. The Perma-Tune runs diagnoses programs automatically that are displayed by two colored LED function lights viewable from underneath the Perma-Tune. These LED lights assist the mechanic in diagnosing your ignition system. There are three PTC Self Resetting fuses that assist in troubleshooting while protecting your Perma-Tune from damage.
Green Power Indicator Light
The green LED indicates the status of the controller inside your Perma-Tune. When the LED flashes ½ second off and ½ second on, the controller is signaling that all is normal. No green light indicates that the controller is not powered up. A steady green light indicates that the controller is getting power but is detecting a fault that prevents it from operating.
Red RPM Indicator Light
The red LED light illuminates every time your Perma-Tune discharges energy to the ignition coil presenting a visual representation of engine RPM. It is useful for performing engine diagnostics as it indicates when the Gen 5 is receiving a trigger signal. During very slow cranking RPM, the light appears to flash because the time between the pulses is long enough that human eye can distinguish each flash. At faster RPM, as when the engine is idling, the light appears to be dimly lit because the human eye cannot distinguish each flash of the LED. When viewing the red LED under normal conditions, the light will appear to be flashing during cranking of the engine, it will appear dimly lit when the engine is running at low RPM and will appear brighter as the RPM increases. When the programmed RPM limit is reached, the discharge pulses will be curtailed by the Perma-Tune controller and so the LED appears to flash. At this point the controller has sensed an over rev situation and so the soft RPM function becomes active to hold the engine at the programmed RPM. If the engine exceeds 3% of the programmed RPM limit, then the controller senses that the rear wheels of the vehicle are over accelerating the engine, as in a missed shift situation. At this point the controller will shut off the discharge pulses completely and so the LED will not illuminate at all. The reverse happens as the engine RPM falls. The default RPM setting for the 911SC903 is 8,000 RPM. Refer to the Bluetooth / USB installation instructions on how to change this setting.
PTC Sensor Self Resetting Fuses
There are three orange components that stick out of the bottom of the Perma-Tune and are labeled Power, Ground and Tacho. These are self resetting fuses that protect your Perma-Tune and car from harmful wring shorts. They are called Protective Thermal Components (PTC) sensors that indicate problems by getting hot. Under normal conditions they will be no warmer than their surroundings. We recommend that you use an infrared thermometer to read them as they will become hot to the touch when tripped.
Power Sensor: This is a thermistor type, self-resetting fuse that will cut off power to the ignition system in case of a power overload without effecting the rest of the ignition circuit. There are several conditions that could cause this PTC to trip but the most common on is if reverse DC power has been accidentally applied to the vehicle battery. Refer to our online guide for the 911SC for more information. Once the fault has been corrected, the PTC will automatically reset itself allowing your Perma-Tune to continue functioning without being damaged. You can tell when the PTC has tripped by its temperature. When the PTC has initially tripped it will be very hot to the touch. After it trips it will stay off but remain slightly warmer than ambient temperatures as long as the circuit fault and power are still present. When the power to the circuit is cut or when the wiring fault is corrected, the PTC cools down to ambient temperatures and will automatically resume operation.
Ground Sensor: This is a thermistor type, self-resetting fuse that will cut off the ground connection between the housing of your Perma-Tune and the vehicle harness that plugs into your Perma-Tune. This will only happen in the event of excessive current flow between the chassis of the vehicle and the engine due to a ground circuit wiring fault within the vehicle. Refer to our online guide for the 911SC for more information. When the PTC has initially tripped it will be very hot to the touch. After it trips it will stay off and cool down but be warm to the touch as long as the key power remains on. Whenever the ignition key is cycled, and, if required, the wiring on the car is corrected, the PTC will cool to ambient temperature and will automatically resume operation.
Tacho Sensor: This is a thermistor type, self-resetting fuse that will cut off the tachometer connection from your Perma-Tune in case the tachometer wiring on your 911SC has shorted to ground or to power. Refer to our online guide for the 911SC for more information. Once the wiring fault on the car has been corrected, the PTC will automatically reset itself allowing your Perma-Tune to continue functioning without being damaged. When the PTC has initially tripped it will be very hot to the touch. After it trips it will stay off and cool down to ambient temperatures. Whenever the ignition key is cycled, and, if required, the wiring on the car is corrected, the PTC will self-reset.
Bluetooth / USB Connector: This is a serial communications port used for diagnostics and programming of all Perma-Tunes with Advanced Ignition Technology It is Bluetooth ready and compatible with RS232 serial communications protocol host computers.
